Bowling Competitions Guidelines 2025

  1. Competitions Entry sheets will be posted on the Competitions Notice Board two weeks before the Opening of the Green. Please read carefully the format of the Competitions at the top of the Entry sheet. 
  2. The entry for Competitions will close the first Monday in May, and the ballot will be drawn by the Competitions Committee during that week and posted on the Competitions Board.
  3. Fees of £1 per Competition should be paid to the Competitions Committee, Pat Silvey or Gary Monks, by 31st May, before playing in the first round of the competition. Fees may be put in an envelope clearly marked with the name of the Competitor listing the entries to which they refer and pinned on the Competitions Notice Board
  4. Challenger/s (the name on the top) are responsible for:
    • Offering dates and times. Should none of the offered dates be suitable, or negotiable, the Challenger/s may claim the game.
    • Checking that the rink is available
    • Arranging a Marker
    • Pinning the completed Score Card on the Competitions Board, marking the appropriate sheet with the result and also noting the result on the Competitions WhatsApp
    • NO SINGLES COMPETITION IS TO BE PLAYED WITHOUT AN INDEPENDENT MARKER.
    • A list of Makers and their telephone numbers will be placed on the Competitions Board. Markers should be contacted directly. The names on the list have agreed to be Markers, but if none of the Markers are available any competent member of the Club could mark
    • After the first round is completed Challengers should contact their opponents within 5 days of:-
    • Singles – the previous round being completed
    • Doubles – the previous doubles round being completed by both pairs

There will be three weeks between each round of the Competitions. Any extensions to the Competition time slots will only be given in exceptional circumstances, and applications for this must be made to the Competitions Secretary who may refer to to the Management Committee for the final decision.

All Competitors and Markers must wear Club Colours when competing on the Green

Substitutions are only allowed in Pairs and due to illness or long term unavailability. Once a substitution is made the substitute must remain in the competition until eliminated. Substitutions can only be made up to and including the semi-finals of the relevant competition. Substitutes must fulfil the competition criteria and not have played in the relevant competition during 2025 season. Where possible subs should be appointed by the Competition Officer and taken from the spare player entries of that competition, if any.

 

Members should not enter any Competition if they know they will not be available on Finals Day

LADIES

Novice – up to 3 years bowling experience4 woods – 21 shots

Championship*4 woods – 21 shots

2 Wood Singles21 ends

MEN

Novice – up to 3 years bowling experience4 woods – 21 shots

* Note. The winners of the Ladies and Men’s Championship will go forward the following year to represent the Club at the County Championships, which is known as the Spicer Cup.

4 Wood Mixed Pairs 18 ends

OVER 60’S COMPETITIONS – Open to both Men and Ladies

Over 60’s Singles4 woods – 21 shots

Over 60’s Pairs** 4 woods – 18 ends

**Note

  • Pairs may be a combination of 2 ladies, 2 men or mixed (this will be indicated on the Competitions Sheet). Winners of these two competitions will go forward the following year to play in the Newport Over 60’s League.
  • Any names which the Competition Committee were unable to place will be the first to be drawn the following year (if these members wish to enter the same competition again).

TOURNAMENTS

MEMORIAL EVENT (Usually on a Sunday in June)

(Margaret Thomas Trophy and the Bert and Phyllis Crook Trophies are combined)

This is a 2 wood Mixed Pairs Competition. Players to select their partners.

After completion of the first round the following format will be put in place: –

  • WINNERS of the first round will continue to play each other on a knock-out basis to win the Margaret Thomas Trophy.
  • LOSERS of the first round will continue to play each other on a knock-out basis to win the Bert and Phyllis Crook Trophies.

(This will give all players at least 2 games.) 

JOHN BONSEY TROPHY (Usually on a Sunday in July)

 This is a 2 Section Rinks Round Robin event culminating in a semi-final and final. 

The entry Fee to the above Tournaments will be £3, including a light lunch and raffle.

SELECTION OF THE TEAMS AND NUMBER OF ENDS WILL BE DECIDED ON THE DAY FOR BOTH TOURNAMENTS
